Louis V. Piestrak, 90

June 17, 2011

Louis V. Piestrak, 90, of 220 Vine Street Danville PA passed away Friday morning, June 17, 2011 at Emmanuel Nursing Center at Maria Joseph Danville PA.  He was born February 28, 1921 in Warrior Run, Luzerne County, PA the son of the late Roman and Sofie Fryn Piestrak. 

He was employed in New York City and Philadelphia before enlisting in the United States Navy.  Mr. Piestrak served on the USS McNair and saw a lot of action in the Pacific Ocean during World War II.  After serving his country, he worked at Kennedy Van Saun Danville PA and later retired from TRW in Danville as a master electrician.

He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Danville PA and loved to volunteer at the church and also at Maria Joseph Manor and St. Cyril Academy.  He enjoyed meeting regularly with his prayer group and also enjoyed his classes at Danville Area Community Center.  Mr. Piestrak was quite an accomplished gardener and loved to share his flowers.  He also was an accomplished woodworker and refinished countless pieces of furniture.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and took great joy in teaching his hunting and fishing skills to his children and grandchildren.  Along with his five brothers, he formed a basketball team which played in the area for several years. 

He was married for 64 years to Ann M. Brady Piestrak who preceded him in death March 29, 2011.  He is survived by four sons; Louis Piestrak and his wife Susan of Durham, NH; James Piestrak and his wife Thelma of Windham, Maine; Kenneth A. Piestrak and his wife Lori of Danville PA and Daniel Piestrak of Jacksonville NC and three daughters; Ann Oberdorf and her husband John of Penn Run PA; Susan Hartman and her husband Dan of Danville PA and Jeannie Ford of Danville PA.  Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lisa Oberdorf.  He was also preceded in death by five brothers; Frank, Roman, Ed, Hank, Emil and two sisters; Emily and Florence.  Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 1:00 PM from St. Joseph Catholic Church 18 E. Center Street Danville PA with the Reverend Steven W. Fauser as celebrant.  Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.  Friends will be received from 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM in the St. Hubert Chapel at the church.  The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Nursing Center at Maria Joseph 600 Schoolhouse Road Danville PA  17821.  Military rites will be accorded by the Montour County Veterans Association.  Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA www.visneski.com
