Betty Hope Getty,
age 88, a long-time Danville resident, died on May 29, 2009 at Grandview
Health Homes in Danville. Betty, the daughter of Howard and Beulah (Fetterman)
Rider was born September 15, 1920 in Bloomsburg, Pa and grew up in
She was one of the
top students in the 1938 Catawissa High School graduating class.
On July 28, 1939,
Betty married Chester S. Getty in the parsonage of the First United
Methodist Church in Catawissa.
Betty worked for the
F.W. Woolworth Company for 33 years where she especially enjoyed interacting
with customers. She was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist
Church and loved traveling to see loved ones, reading historical novels, and
cooking. Betty particularly enjoyed canning home grown vegetables and
preparing picnic lunches with strawberry Jell-o to share with friends and
Betty is survived by
Chester, her husband of 69 years; her sister, Mildred Fetterman; daughters,
Linda Hoover and Gail Stan; grandchildren, Elizabeth von Toll, John Hoover
and Matthew Stan; and great grandchildren, John Hoover, Alec Hoover and
Caroline Hoover. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by
her granddaughter, Tracey Hoover.
A graveside memorial
service for Betty Hope Getty will be held at Elan Memorial Park in
Bloomsburg on Wednesday, June 3 at 11:00 AM. A picnic lunch at Knoebels
Grove will follow.
