Richard McKelvy “Dick” Shaffer, 90, of Danville
PA passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at his residence.
He was born June 10, 1930 in Bloomsburg, PA, the son of the late Orval
Wesley and Ethel Rose Piddington Shaffer.
Richard graduated from Bloomsburg High School
He was married to his devoted wife of 70 years,
Eileen M. (Foust) Shaffer. They were married January 6, 1951.
A career employee for over 63 years, Richard
was employed at several businesses in the area. They included Magee Carpet
where he worked as a secretary, Claire Hauck Construction, TRW and Merck and
Company. His most recent employment was as a water treatment plant operator
for the Danville Borough since after the flood of 72 until 2011 when he
retired at the age of 81.
In earlier years, he was actively involved in
the Luther League alongside his wife, where he served as an advisor and
where they both enjoyed helping others with various needs and taking day
He was an avid animal lover. Richard was a
willingly generous man, and always put others needs ahead of his own, and
the people in his life knew they could always count on him for anything.
He loved to make people laugh with his wonderful wit and sense of humor
that will be greatly missed. His hardworking work ethic was displayed
throughout his life. Another stellar trait was his interest in teaching his
daughters how to drive a stick shift. Most of all, he was a devoted husband
and father as well as a source of quiet strength for his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two
daughters: Laurie A. Walter and her husband Brian of Catawissa PA and
Jennifer L. Waldbieser and her husband Carl of Allentown PA. Also surviving
is one grandson, Graham Waldbieser, also of Allentown PA as well as numerous
nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother Orval W. Shaffer of
Berwick PA and one sister, Catherine Corse of Binghamton NY. He was
preceded in death by two brothers; Phillip and Dennis, in infancy and two
sisters; Jacqueline Creasy and Nadine Sterner.
A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at
a later date at the convenience of the family.
