Richard McKelvy "Dick" Shaffer

May 20, 2021

Richard McKelvy “Dick” Shaffer, 90, of Danville PA passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at his residence.   He was born June 10, 1930 in Bloomsburg, PA, the son of the late Orval Wesley and Ethel Rose Piddington Shaffer.

Richard graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1948.

He was married to his devoted wife of 70 years, Eileen M. (Foust) Shaffer.  They were married January 6, 1951.

A career employee for over 63 years, Richard was employed at several businesses in the area. They included Magee Carpet where he worked as a secretary, Claire Hauck Construction, TRW and Merck and Company.  His most recent employment was as a water treatment plant operator for the Danville Borough since after the flood of 72 until 2011 when he retired at the age of 81.

In earlier years, he was actively involved in the Luther League alongside his wife, where he served as an advisor and where they both enjoyed helping others with various needs and taking day trips.

He was an avid animal lover.  Richard was a willingly generous man, and always put others needs ahead of his own, and the people in his life knew they could always count on him for anything.   He loved to make people laugh with his wonderful wit and sense of humor that will be greatly missed.  His hardworking work ethic was displayed throughout his life.  Another stellar trait was his interest in teaching his daughters how to drive a stick shift.  Most of all, he was a devoted husband and father as well as a source of quiet strength for his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Laurie A. Walter and her husband Brian of Catawissa PA and Jennifer L. Waldbieser and her husband Carl of Allentown PA.  Also surviving is one grandson, Graham Waldbieser, also of Allentown PA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his brother Orval W. Shaffer of Berwick PA and one sister, Catherine Corse of Binghamton NY.  He was preceded in death by two brothers; Phillip and Dennis, in infancy and two sisters; Jacqueline Creasy and Nadine Sterner.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Animal Resource Center PO Box 439  Bloomsburg PA  17815.
