Stephen R. Bennick

September 22, 2020

Stephen R. Bennick, 61, of Danville, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, September 21, 2020. He was born June 7, 1959 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, a son of the late Stephen Bennick and Catherine (Murphy) Bennick.

Steve was a graduate of Danville High School, Class of 1977. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army where he served from 1977–1981. He was a member of the Old Guard, serving in the Presidential Honor Guard under presidents: Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. He returned home where he joined the Danville Police Force working alongside his father, Captain Steve Bennick, from 1981-1987. Steve later joined the Sunbury Police Department where he worked for 18 years. He was promoted during this time to Captain, the first in nearly 50 years. He retired from the Sunbury Police Department in 2018 and went to work for the Montour County Sheriff’s Dept. as a Deputy Sheriff.

Steve held various roles over his lifetime, including: assisting the Northumberland Montour County Drug Task Force, Task Force of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Safe Street Task Force. He was a proud member and former chief and VP of the Continental Fire Company Station 30, the Financial Treasurer for the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 52, a member of both: PA Dept. Sheriff’s Association and Pennsylvania Narcotics Officer’s Association, and served as a firefighter for multiple local fire companies.

In his spare time he was an avid hunter, loyal member of the Danville community, as well as a member and past president of Lazy Six Inc. Steve will be dearly missed by many in our community, especially by his family, friends, and fellow brothers in blue and red. Heaven gained one of the best, but those he left behind will miss his witty sense of humor and contagious smile.

Steve was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Vicki (Gum); one daughter, Melissa Piestrak Joyce and son-in-law, Mike Joyce of Throop; three sisters and two brother-in-laws; Barbara and David Maneval of Bloomsburg, Kathleen Smith of California, and Charlotte and Mark Wertman of Catawissa; and 6 nieces: Stacey, Lynn, Stephanie, Kristin, Brittany, and Mackenzie.

A Celebration of his life will be held at a later date for immediate family only.

Flowers will be provided by the family.  Memorial contributions in his name may be made to any charity of your choosing.
