Joseph G. Oberdorf,
76, of Riverside PA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on
Friday, August 14, 2020 at his residence. He was born on January 15, 1944
in Danville PA the son of the late Chester and Mazie Shultz Oberdorf.
He is survived by
his devoted wife of 56 years, Jean C. Roeder Oberdorf. They were married
June 26, 1965
Joseph graduated
from Danville High School in 1962 and attended Williamsport Area Community
College.
He was employed as
a Payroll Manager at the Rea and Derick Office in Northumberland PA from
1965 to 1984 at which time he became the Riverside Borough Manager, retiring
in 2005. He served recently as the Mahoning Township Secretary. He was
elected as the Mayor of Riverside in 2013 through 2017.
Joseph was a
member of First Baptist Church of Danville PA where he served on the Board
of Trustees and was a Youth Bible Teacher.
He also served the
Montour County Council of Governments as Treasurer/President and was a
member of the Southside Fire Company.
As an
eight-month-old baby, he contracted polio which affected his right leg, but
was resilient throughout his life playing many sports. He enjoyed every
sport that he tried including fishing of all kinds, hunting of all kinds,
tennis and scuba diving. His favorite sport was coaching the youth in
baseball. He received his strength from watching the kids in AAA baseball,
Little League 9-12 year olds and then coaching them when they were in their
teens as a Junior Legion Coach.
Joe was deeply
devoted to his family. He cherished his wife, children and grandchildren.
He was known for his smile and great sense of humor. A friend to everyone,
Joe was an invested listener that radiated warmth and quiet wisdom.
In addition to his
wife, he is survived by one son, Joseph T. Oberdorf and his wife Robin of
Riverside and Christine Oberdorf Coleman and her husband Christopher of
Danville PA. Also surviving are two grandchildren; Jacob and Mina Oberdorf;
both of whom he adored. Several nieces and nephews also survive him.
He is also
survived by two brothers; William Oberdorf and his wife Betty of Virginia,
and John Oberdorf and his wife Ann of Penn Run PA.
He was preceded in
death by one brother, James Bower and two sisters, Phyllis Zlomsowitch and
Florence Foust.
Services and
burial will be private at the convenience of the family. The family will
provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church
of Danville 12 Brookside Drive Danville PA 17821.
