M. Walter Bowen

M. Walter Bowen, 82, of Riverside PA was welcomed into Glory on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.  He was born July 26, 1936 in Bloomsburg PA ­­­­­­­­­ the son of the late Miles Stanley and Caroline Elizabeth Roller Bowen.

Walter graduated from Danville High School and attended Pennsylvania Technological Institute in Williamsport.

He served in the United States Army from September 1958 – September 1961 where he served 30 months in Germany as a SP5.

Walter is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Nancy Miles Bowen. They were married December 16, 1967.

Walter was employed as a machinist at Smith Machine Shop in Danville PA for 30 years and later worked part time at Shumaker Industries in Northumberland PA. 

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as Trustee and as a radio sound technician. He was very active with the Danville Fire Police and served as Fire Chief for Southside Fire Company including the flood of 1972. He also served in the Boy Scouts as a junior assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 30 Riverside PA.   He enjoyed teaching and recruiting the help of friends in maintaining rental units and other projects.  He was actively involved in HAM Amateur Radio for 25 years, an active car enthusiast and enjoyed gardening. 

Walter will be remembered as a committed, loving, patient grandfather who was actively involved in each of their lives as often as he could there.  His quiet selflessness, dignity, and service to others will be missed by many who knew and loved him.  

In addition to his wife; he is survived by two daughters; Rosann Koble and her husband Duane of Riverside PA and Heather Bowen and her husband Christopher Benko of Bernardsville NJ.  Also surviving are six grandchildren, Alex, Marissa, Alec, Andrew, Katrina and Zachary and two great-grandchildren; Justus and River.  He is also survived by his brother, James Bowen and his wife Lyn of Danville PA as well as seven nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Walter’s Life on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 2:30 PM at First Baptist Church, 12 Brookside Drive, Danville, PA, (Off 642 East) with the Reverend Dawes J. Dunham officiating assisted by Pastor Paul Fink.  Friends will be received from 12:30 PM to 2:15 PM.   Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville PA.  Military rites will be accorded by the Montour County Veterans Association.

Memorial Contributions may be made to First Baptist Church.
