Sandra Shuman Christian

January 26, 2018

Sandra Shuman Christian, age 77, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones at her home in Danville PA.

She was born at Geisinger Memorial Hospital on March 4, 1940, the daughter of the late Harold C and Marqueen R Shuman.

Sandra was raised in Lime Ridge, graduating with Honors from Bloomsburg High School in 1958.

Her Geisinger birthplace was significant since she was born and bred to be a Geisinger nurse.  Following her mother and her two sisters, Sandra graduated from Geisinger School of Nursing (1962) and in that same year married her high school sweetheart, John Christian.  She followed her husband to North Carolina for a brief Army stint and then they made their home in Bloomsburg, PA.  In 1973 they moved to Danville, PA where they remained.

Sandra was raised in the United Church of Christ, Berwick, PA, but after marriage became a member of First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg, PA for many years where she served as a Deacon and an Elder.  In later years, she was a member of Grove Presbyterian Church, Danville, PA.

Sandra worked briefly for the Geisinger School of Nursing, did private duty nursing and then focused on raising her girls.  Later in life she became a real estate agent for Villager Realty, Danville.

In order to spend leisure time with John, Sandra learned the sport of golf and enjoyed many years of golfing at Frosty Valley Country Club, competing in Womenís Central Penn Golf tournaments and serving as Director of both organizations. She was twice Womenís Club Champion at Frosty Valley Country Club (1980, 1983), and also earned four Club Championships (2000, 2007, 2011, 2012) at Saddlebrook Resort, Wesley Chapel, FL where John and Sandy made their winter home for many years.  Sandra was relentlessly competitive, and her golfing friends have shared that they preferred being her partner rather than being her opponent.  Sandra also enjoyed shopping, bridge, playing Scrabble and doing puzzles, looking forward to the new Cryptoquip puzzle daily.  Above all, her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family whom she adored.

In addition to her husband John, Sandra is survived by two daughters, Beth Christian (Eric Deeter) Bloomsburg, PA, and Amy Christian, Santa Fe, NM; two sisters, Ann Burgess, La Mesa, CA, and Jane Kile (Allen), Bloomsburg, PA.  Sandra also delighted in her three grandchildren, Christian LaMotte (Alyssa), Megan LaMotte and Noquisi Christian-Smith as well as two bonus grandchildren Bryce Deeter and Sequoia Thron-Smith. The blessing of her last year was the birth of her great-granddaughter, Lorelei  Christine LaMotte, with whom she enjoyed daily visits.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 4:00 PM at Grove Presbyterian Church 330 Bloom Road Danville PA with the Reverend Dr. Robert J. Andrews, Pastor Emeritus, officiating.  Friends will be received from 2:30 -3:45 PM in the Great Room of the church.  The family will provide flowers. In honor of Sandraís motherís nursing career, memorial contributions may be made to the Lutz Nursing Endowment Fund, c/o Geisinger Health Foundation, MC-25-76, 100 N. Academy Ave., Danville, PA 17822 or TheAmerican Cancer Society PO Box 22718 Oklahoma City OK  73123-1718 or online at www.cancer.org.
