Carl E. “Chub” Sponenberg, 86, formerly of
Danville, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the
home of his son and daughter-in-law in Greenwood, South Carolina. He was
born October 14, 1932 in Benton PA, the son of the late Griffith and Vivian
Carl graduated from Berwick High School in 1950
and then enlisted in the United States Army where he fought in the Korean
War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service
Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and the UN Service Medal. He was last
employed as a materials engineer with PennDot (never missing a day of work.)
He was married for 54 years to the late S. Ann
Udelhofen Sponenberg who preceded him in death on November 4, 2004.
He enjoyed camping with his wife, spending time
with family and
Winters at their condo in Daytona Beach FL where they
met lots of new friends. Carl was
happiest sitting on his Allis Chalmers tractor and farming. He loved dogs,
especially Dalmatians. His children all helped him bail hay, feed animals,
gather eggs and anything else their Dad needed to be done. He was a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church Danville PA, the Caldwell Consistory,
Danville-Mahoning Lodge #224 F & AM, Danville American Legion, Loyal Order
of Moose, VFW, and the Washies and East End Fire Companies.
He is survived by one son, Kevin Sponenberg and
his wife Diane of Greenwood SC and four daughters; Carla Graham and her
husband Thomas; Debra Walter and her husband Richard; Holly Greenly and her
husband Bill and Jan Hendrickson; all of Danville PA. Also surviving are
ten grandchildren; Matthew and Andrew Graham, Erin Feist, Alec Herman, Ryan
and Kaitlyn Greenly, Taylor Hendrickson, Grier, Griffin and Garrett
Sponenberg and two great-grandchildren; Leah Graham and Sullivan Feist. He
is also survived by one brother Sam Sponenberg and his wife Rosalee of
Somerville NJ and his brother-in-law, Carl Bower of Berwick PA as well as
numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl, who was in failing health, resided in
South Carolina for the past eight years with his son, Kevin and
daughter-in-law, Diane and their sons. Carl became especially close to a
friend of Kevin’s, Jeff Lench, whom he considered
a second son. Jeff, Kevin and Carl spent many days talking,
tending to the garden, and enjoying the wonderful South Carolina weather.
Carl and Ann’s children had promised to their
parents that they would never have to enter a nursing home. They fulfilled
that promise because of their daughter-in-law, son and boys. Diane gave
selflessly of herself for the loving care she provided to Carl. The
Sponenberg family feel they have been truly blessed to have Diane as part of
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services to be held on
Friday, December 14, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church 215 East
Market Street Danville PA with the Reverend Trevor J. Hahn officiating.
Friends will be received from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM. Burial will follow in
Odd Fellows Cemetery Danville PA. Military Rites will be accorded by the
Montour County Veterans. The family will provide flowers.
