Rev. Gerald "Gerry" Glenn Heilman

Rev. Gerald “Gerry” Glenn Heilman ,94, died peacefully Monday, January 23, 2017 at Riverwoods in Lewisburg PA.  He was born May 17, 1922 in Manchester, York County, PA the son of the late John Elias and Mary Jane (Detwiler) Heilman. 

He was married to Geraldine Marie (Bowker) Heilman for 70 years, who survives. They were married June 8, 1946. 

He graduated from Manchester High School (now Northeastern High School), Albright College, Reading, PA, and United Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, IL with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1947. He was ordained a Full Elder in the Central PA. Conference (now Susquehanna) of the Evangelical United Brethren (now United Methodist) Church in 1948. While a high school student, he sang in a student quartet and sang the role of Captain in the senior play HMS Pinafore operetta. While at Albright he was a member of

 Alpha Pi Omega Social Fraternity, president of Kappa Tau Chi pre-ministerial fraternity and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA); and sang in the Glee Club. 

He was employed as a clergyman by the Conference for 45 years serving 11 congregations including Calvary EUB church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as student pastor; the West Milton Charge; Middlesex Charge; Immanuel EUB church, Baltimore, MD.; Trinity United Methodist, Williamsport; Simpson-Temple Yoked Parish, Altoona; and St. Paul’s United Methodist, Lewisburg from where he retired in 1991. 

Reverend Heilman was active in mission work, serving as Dean of Conference Schools of Christian Mission, local interfaith activities, and served on the denomination’ s Commission on the Role and Status of Women. His memberships included MFSA (Methodist Federation for Social Action), Preacher’s Aid Society, and Susquehanna Conference Credit Union. He was a lifeguard at Central Oak Heights church camp, where he also was a counselor for Music Camps for many years. He was the camp cook at deer hunting camp for 35 years.  

Reverend Heilman enjoyed reading, gardening, singing with the Chi Rho Singers (Conference clergy choir), flea markets and auctions, cooking, and spending time at the family cottage at Central Oak Heights, West Milton, PA. 

In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters:  Suzanne K., Williamsport; Liz H. Dincher (Bill), Lawrenceville; and Rebecca L. Heffner (Dale), Alburtis, PA and two sons; Peter S. (Nancy), Williamsport, and Paul D., of Sunbury/West Milton.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Claire and three sisters; Margaret E. Heilman Swan Arber.  Miriam V. Heilman Strausbaugh and Theda Heilman Ely. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Gerald’s Life to be held on Saturday, January 28, 2917 2016 at 3:00 PM at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Reverend Judy Herrold officiating.   Friends will be received from 2:00 until the time of service.  

The family will provide flowers. Memorial Contributions may be made to Central Oak Heights Tabernacle Roof Fund PO Box 879 Bowie MD  20718, Riverwoods Benevolent Care Fund 15 Ridgecrest Circle Lewisburg PA  17837, or St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Mission Fund 42 S. 4th Street Lewisburg PA  17837.
