Lois C. Bryner

Lois C. Bryner, 93, formerly of 38 Ash Street, Danville, PA, passed away Monday, August 8, 2016 at Emmanuel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at Maria Joseph, Danville, PA where she had resided for the past two years. She was born on April 25, 1923 in Wrightsville, PA, the daughter of the late Reverend Charles Wilbur and Carrie (Waltman) Bryner.

She graduated from Danville High School. Lois also graduated from Bloomsburg State Teacher's College in 1944 where she was on the Dean's Honor List for scholastic excellence. Lois was also a member of Kappa Delta Pi which was an honorary fraternity in education. She was one of the first students to receive a degree on the three-year plan that was instituted because of the war. She obtained her Master of Science degree in Education on January 31, 1948 from Bucknell University.

She began her teaching career as an Elementary school teacher in the Danville Area School District at the Second Ward School. She later taught at the Mahoning-Cooper Elementary School, where in addition to teaching was the acting Principal. Lois retired in 1989 after 45 years of service.

Lois devoted her life to education and supervised more than 10,000 students, 25 teachers, 25 student teachers and six teachers aides. She was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Lois served as a representative in the Pennsylvania State Education Association. She was also the first elementary teacher in the district to earn a Master's degree in elementary education while also obtaining certification as an elementary principal, reading specialist, and supervisor of elementary education. Lois received many honors including the Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1972 and was named "First Lady of the Year" by the Danville Chapter of Tau Sigma Phi Sorority in 1986.

She was the longest active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Danville, PA where her father the Reverend Charles Wilbur Bryner had served as pastor. Her membership there began on June 12, 1932 at the age of nine.

Lois was an avid gardener, especially flower gardening. She also enjoyed traveling. One of her greatest enjoyments in life was serving her friends and family through her selfless acts of caring with any needs they may have had.

Lois is survived by one niece; Betsy Peyton and her husband Tom of Bonners Ferry, ID; two-great-nieces; Mollie Yeatts and her husband Bruce and daughter, Peyton of Bainbridge Island WA and Beth Walker and her husband Travis and their children;Sarah, Daniel and Noah of Warrenton VA and one great-nephew; Alan Mills and his wife Kenyette of Montclair VA. A grand-nephew: Leon K. Bryner III (Kirk) his wife Jennifer and son Leon K. Bryner IV (Lil Kip) of VA. Also surviving are several other great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother; Leon K. Bryner, Sr. and one nephew Leon K. Bryner, Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 11:00AM at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 10 W. Mahoning Street, Danville, PA with the Reverend Ronald S. French officiating. Friends will be received from 9:30AM until the time of service. Burial will be private in Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville, PA.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Danville Area Community Foundation 725 West Front Street Berwick PA 18603 in memory of Lois C. Bryner.
