Dorothy Y. Burton

Dorothy Y. Burton, 98, formerly of Danville PA and Philadelphia PA went home to be with her Lord on December 9, 2016 at her residence at Rosemont Presbyterian Village in Bryn Mawr PA.  She was born September 14, 1918 the daughter of the late Charles A. and Malvina L. Cousins Young.  

She graduated from Danville High School in 1936 and attended Virginia State College and Temple University. 

She was employed by the Federal Government in Philadelphia in management of top secret high value items, retiring in 1973.  She also worked with the Board of Education in Philadelphia PA as a Librarian for five years. 

Dorothy was a longtime member of Overbook Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia where she was a member of the Session and served on the Missions and Outreach Committee. Dorothy served on the Governing Board of Directors of the Ladies Aide Society of the Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia PA. She was also a member of the Urban League and Guild of Philadelphia for 32 years. Other memberships included Black Caucus of Philadelphia, Quarter Century Club, AARP West Park Chapter #664, American Legion Auxiliary, Danville PA Post 40 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1212. 

She enjoyed reading and loved to travel, especially to the Holy Land. 

She is survived by her relative and good friend Lemuel A. Stiles, Jr., (his wife Cheryl) nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and a host of friends. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Charles E. Young, Sr., Harold C. Young, Sr. and George D. “Chubb” Young of Danville PA.  

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Overbrook Presbyterian Church 6376 City Avenue

Philadelphia PA with the Reverend Dr. Andrew H. Mann, Jr.  officiating.    Friends will be received from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM.  

The family will provide flowers. Memorial Contributions may be made to Overbrook Presbyterian Church 6376 City Avenue Philadelphia PA  19151.
