Charles E. "Sonny" McWilliams,  Jr.

Charles E. "Sonny" McWilliams, Jr., 90, of 520 Sylvan Drive, DuBois, PA, passed away September 23, 2016 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois. Sonny and his late wife, Nancy Donohue McWilliams, were life-long residents of Danville, PA. He was born December 1, 1925 in Danville, the son of the late Charles E. and Alma Kooher McWilliams. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bessie McWilliams Sliker. 

Married on July 15, 1946, Nancy and Sonny were married for 68 years until her death in 2014. 

Sonny graduated from Danville High School in 1942.  After high school, he enrolled at Gettysburg on a football & basketball scholarship. His academic career was interrupted when he enlisted in the U. S. Army in WW II, achieving rank of Private First Class and receiving the Bronze Star, the Battle of the Bulge medal, Europe-Africa medal, Combat Service medal, and Army Good Conduct, Honorable Service and WW II Victory medals.

Sonny worked as a butcher and grocer in his fatherís grocery store for a long time. He graduated from Bloomsburg State College with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, earned a Master's degree in Elementary Education from Bucknell University and a Masterís Degree in History from Bloomsburg University Ė the first class in a graduate program at Bloomsburg University. He started his teaching career in Selinsgrove School District, then transferred to the Danville School District where he taught many grades. He eventually became principal of Riverside School, then the Diehl School until his retirement in 1988. 

Sonny was a member of Pine Street Lutheran Church, Danville, PA.   

He was an avid fly fisherman and hunter.  He liked to bowl, play Pinochle, dance, sing and even played the drums. He belonged to the Moose, Elks, American Legion and VFW. In the 1960ís, he was the Montour County Treasurer. From 1989 until 1995 he served on the Geisinger Authority. It shall be noted that his acquaintances considered him to be the best whistler. He loved spending time with family and friends, eager to help anyone who needed it.

Charles "Sonny" McWilliams of Danville PA is survived by one son, Charles E. "Chad" McWilliams III, and his wife, Rory, of Yorba Linda, CA; and one daughter, Sharon Frances Carr, and her partner, Kevin Hudock, DuBois, PA.  Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Renee Mongold and her husband, Steve, of Virginia Beach, VA; Brian Carr of Dallas, TX; Alyssa Putnam and her husband, Niles, of Dover, DE; Mark Carr and Patrick Carr of Pittsburgh, PA; Brett Holmes and his wife, Jessica, of Yorba Linda, CA; Shannon Gard and her husband, Wes, of Ladera Ranch, CA; and Kerry McWilliams of Anaheim, CA;  and eight great-grandchildren: Ben, Kyle, Will, Josh, Dorian, Addy, Taylor and Sydney.

Friends will be received Tuesday evening, September 27 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 10 West Mahoning Street, Danville, PA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Wednesday, September 28 at 11:00 AM at Pine Street Lutheran Church, 407 Pine Street, Danville, PA, with the Reverend Dr. Lois Martin officiating.  Friends will be received from 9:45 AM until 10:45 AM at the church. Immediately following the service, guests are welcome to a luncheon at the church. At 1:15 PM a military burial will be held in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Danville, PA.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Manor, 1100 West Long Avenue, Dubois, PA  15801; Pine Street Lutheran Church in Danville, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN  38105.
