Robert James Snyder

September 29, 2013

Robert James Snyder, 81, of 1071 Avenue D Riverside PA died Friday, September 27, 2013 at Columbia Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall Danville PA.  He was born June 1, 1932 in Dallas PA the son of the late Harry and Elizabeth Eckhardt Snyder. 

Bob was a graduate of the Class of 1950 at Wyoming Seminary in Kingston PA; completed Stanton Preparatory Academy in Cornwall NY in 1951; and attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg PA.  He enlisted in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 serving with the Counter Intelligence Corps in France receiving an honorable discharge in 1959.  Upon return from the military he partnered with his father in Snyder's Improvement Company, a roofing and siding business, in Bloomsburg PA.  Later, Bob worked in Sales in the mobile and modular housing industry. 

He was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Riverside PA where he served in the choir, many times as a soloist.  Prior to this he was a member of Pine Street Lutheran Church Danville PA serving on church council, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir, where he also was a soloist.  His joy in life was singing and he sang in the Danville Community Singers, at many weddings and special occasions.  While in Florida, he enjoyed singing at church, his resort's theatre group and talent shows. Bob was a past member of the Danville Lions Club serving as President and Deputy District Governor.  He was also a member of the Danville-Mahoning Lodge 224 F & AM and served as President of the Danjo Wheelers in 1987 and President of the Central PA Round and Square Dance Association.  In addition to enjoying square dancing, he spent many hours ballroom and couple's line dancing with his wife, Carol.   

Winters were spent in Florida the past ten years at Traveler's Rest Resort which became a second home to him.  While there, he was very active with his numerous enjoyments which included playing golf, dancing, bicycling, playing bridge and chess. 

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol M. Olshefski Snyder whom he married July 7, 1962.  Also surviving is one son, Marc and his wife Pamela of Clifton VA and his two grandchildren; Jake and Will.  He is also survived by his brother Harry and his wife Fay of Topsham Maine.  He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Pauline L. Mackert.  He was preceded in death by one brother, William in 2007. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Bob's Life to be held Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 11:30 AM St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Riverside PA with his pastor the Reverend Dr. Donald Hurley officiating.  Burial will be private in Odd Fellows Cemetery Danville PA.  Friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.  The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Columbia Montour Home Hospice 410 Glenn Avenue Suite 200 Bloomsburg PA  17815.  Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA.  www.visneski.com
