Roy Michael Mader

Roy Michael “Mike” Mader, 70, of Riverside Pennsylvania passed away on July 25, 2013 at his home.  Mr. Mader was born on July 24, 1943 in Bloomsburg PA the third child to the late J. Ard and Helen Rishel Mader.  

He was a 1961 graduate of Danville High School and later that year married Kathleen “Kate” Stanko.  The couple had two daughters. 

Following high school, Mr. Mader joined the United States Army where he served on active duty from 1964-1968 and again from 1970-1977. He completed one tour in Vietnam and another tour in Korea before retiring from the Army Reserve in 2003 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his service, Mr. Mader attended the U.S. Army Schools of Psychiatric Nursing and Regional Anesthesia. He graduated from the Geisinger Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia in 1972 and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Bloomsburg University in 1979.  

Mr. Mader was employed by Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA as a nurse anesthetist from 1979 until his retirement in 1997.  

Throughout his life, Mike was active in a number of sports and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a long-time member of the Danville Rod & Gun Club. Reading, crossword puzzles and gardening were among his other favorite pastimes.  

Surviving family members include his daughters, LTC Lynne Ciancio of Colorado and Johnna Bord of Lebanon PA; grandchildren: 1st Lt. Jeremy Fox, Maryland; Lauren and Nicholas Ciancio of Colorado; Brandon and Jadyn Bord of  Lebanon PA; nephews, Richard R. Smith and Mark Mader, both of Danville; and niece Leanne Mader, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gay Pontius, and his brother, Terry Mader. Also preceding him in death was his beloved dog, Tannie.  

Relatives and friends will be received Thursday evening, August 1, 2013 from 5:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA. Military honors will be accorded by the Fort Indiantown Gap Honor Guard at 7:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas Beaver Free Library, 205 Ferry St., Danville PA 17821 or the Pennsylvania SPCA 2801 Bloom Road Danville PA 17821.  www.visneski.com
