Joyce Fingado Gibson, 77

January 2, 2012

Joyce Fingado Gibson, 77, of Riverside, Pennsylvania where she has resided since 1968, died January 1, 2012 at her residence surrounded by her family.  She had been dealing with cancer for the last six months.  She was born October 30, 1934 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, the eldest child of 10, to the late Gus and Ruth Warn Fingado.

She graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1952 and attended Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina for two years where she met her future husband.  She then attended Columbia University School of Nursing, graduating in 1957 with her RN and BS Degrees in Nursing.

She was then married and worked as a graduate nurse in Chapel Hill, North Carolina while her husband attended medical school.  Her husband of 54 years, Dr. William S. Gibson, Jr., whom she married July 27, 1957, survives her.   Joyce exchanged her nurse’s cap for a mother’s responsibilities in 1961 with the birth of their son, Christopher.

Joyce was a member of Grove Presbyterian Church Danville PA for 45 years.  She served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher for 33 years.  Joyce was an active and dedicated member of the choir loving the music she sang as an alto.  Her other activities at the church were numerous.  She served as a Deacon and later as an Elder where her responsibilities included serving on the Building and Grounds Committee with special and keen interest with the flowers and landscaping.  One of her greatest priorities at the church was with the Women of the Grove.  She was well known by many there for being a superb cook and was always ready to help with the meal preparations.  Joyce started the Quilting Group in 1987 which met every Monday that worked together to complete a quilt each year which was sold to raise money for the Women’s group.

Joyce was a member of the Geisinger Women’s Auxiliary serving as the President for four years which resulted in helping to start the Blood Mobile Program at the hospital and also served as a Volunteer Nurse with it. She served as a Board Member of the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

For 15 years, during the summer, Joyce worked as a Counselor with the kids at Camp Dost, a cancer camp for kids.  During this time, she was a Board member of the Ronald McDonald House and frequently volunteered there also.

In 2001, Joyce was recognized by the local chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority with the Women of the Year award.  In 2008, Joyce, along with her husband, were the recipients of the Red Cross Distinguished Citizen Award.

Joyce was an avid reader.  One of her greatest enjoyments was gardening with being a Certified Master Gardener in 2010.  Her greenhouse was well known as the “plant hospital” for many of her friend’s “sick” plants.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her four sons: Christopher and his wife Eileen of Muncy, PA; Dr. Whitney and his wife Mary of Greenville, SC; Scott and his wife Sandra of Goldsboro, NC and W. Todd and his wife Angie of Danville PA.  She was affectionately known as “Grammy” to her eight grandchildren; Rachel, Sarah, Clark, Elizabeth, Katie, Bess, Emma and Jack.  She truly was the “Queen” for her grandchildren, especially for her granddaughters.

Also surviving are three brothers; Alan and his wife Carol of The Villages in FL; Peter in Ridgewood, NJ and David and his wife Sharon in Rochester NY and two sisters; Bonnie Johnson and her husband Tom of Red Bank NJ and Penelope Lichatowich and her husband Thomas of Portland OR.  She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Joyce’s Life to be held Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Grove Presbyterian Church 330 Bloom Street Danville PA with her pastor the Reverend Dr. Robert J. Andrews officiating.  **Friends will be received in the Great Room at the church from 10:00 AM until 12:45 PM.  The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Danville Area Community Center PO Box 125 Danville PA 17821.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W.
