Elnora U. Houck, 92

February 3, 2012

Elnora U. Houck, 92, formerly of 401 Water Street Danville PA went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Nottingham Village in Northumberland PA.  She was born March 7, 1919 in Union Corner, Rush Township, Northumberland County PA the daughter of the late Rollin M. and Verna E. Fegley Unger. 

She graduated from Danville High School in 1936 as Class Valedictorian.  She graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College summa cum laude with the Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1940.  Elnora attended Temple University in Philadelphia PA and received her Master’s Degree in Education from Bucknell University in 1963. 

Elnora was employed as a Foreign Language teacher from 1941-1943 at Reade Township High School in Cambria County PA.   She was employed by Danville Area High School from 1943 – 1980 teaching primarily Latin and French along with English and Spanish, from where she retired.  While at the high school, she was responsible for the Honor Society, French Club and Spanish Club.

Elnora was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville PA where she faithfully taught the Friendship Class for 20 years.  She enjoyed teaching Bible School and served as a Trustee. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Pennsylvania State Education Association.  Elnora was a faithful volunteer at Geisinger Medical Center for over 20 years delivering mail to patients.  She enjoyed camping and spending time with her family.  She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-granddaughter whom she adored.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William H. Houck on December 30, 2006.  They were married November 29, 1946.

She is survived by two sons; Dr. Donald M. Houck and daughter-in-law Patricia of Lewisburg PA and Kim C. Houck and daughter-in-law Sunny of Virginia Beach VA and one daughter, Susan J. McLaughlin and son-in-law John of Danville PA.  Also surviving are six grandsons; Adam Houck of Lawton, Oklahoma, Matthew McLaughlin and his wife Corrine of Muncy PA; Dr. Collin McLaughlin of Philadelphia PA; Blaine McLaughlin of Colorado, Kwang Ho and Key Yoon Houck, both of Virginia Beach VA and two granddaughters; Kimberly Houck of Virginia Beach VA and Ashley Houck of New York City, NY.  Also surviving is her great-granddaughter, Riley McLaughlin of Muncy PA.  She is also survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Upright of Huntington Valley PA.  Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida and North Carolina. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter Charlotte A. Houck, in infancy.  She was preceded in death by five brothers; Francis, George, Harold, Richard and Luther Unger and two sisters; Catherine Unger and Betty Jane Unger in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 6, 2012 at 3:30 PM at the First Baptist Church 20 Brookside Drive Danville PA (off of 642 East) with the Reverend Dr. Harry H. Wonderland officiating assisted by Reverend Dawes Dunham.  Burial will be private in Mt. Vernon Cemetery Riverside PA.  Friends will be received in the chapel from 2:15 PM until 3:15 PM.  The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Memorial Fund or Thomas Beaver Free Library 25 East Market Street Danville PA  17821.  Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA.  www.visneski.com
