Richard F. Little

July 23, 2010

Richard F. Little, 76, of 245 McCracken Road Danville PA passed away Friday morning, July 23, 2010 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA.  He was born September 19, 1933 in Nordmont PA the son of the late Edward and Carolyn Keeler Little. 

He graduated from Sonestown High School in Sonestown PA in 1951 and from Penn State University with a BS in Agriculture Education in 1955 where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.  Richard served as a C – 123 pilot  in the United States Air Force from 1956-1960 and honorably discharged as Captain.  His Cooperative Extension service for Montour County from 1964-1992 included being County Extension Director/County Agricultural Agent and was also Area Dairy Specialist for Snyder, Union and Northumberland Counties.  He served in Columbia County from 1960-1964 as an Associate Agent and in Lehigh County in 1955 as an Assistant Agent.  Richard also served as secretary of the Board of Directors for Briar Creek Insurance Company.   

He was associated with many organizations including Clan Little Society, USA; National Rifle Assocation as a lifetime member, training counselor, certified pistol, rifle, shotgun and home firearm safety instructor; 4-H shooting sports instructor; Youth Field Day, Co-founder; Danville Pistol Club, founding member; Northern Montour Sportsman club; VP, President and Board of Directors; Pennsylvania Farmers Association; Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg PA and the Laporte Methodist Church.  He was a former member of Kiwanis, Northumberland Gun Club and the Montour-DeLong Fair Board.  He received several awards including Pennsylvania Dairyman’s Association Extension Award for Valuable and Noteworthy contribution to Pennsylvania Dairy Industry and the Career Guidance Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. 

Richard was a notable leader and educator.  He inspired generations of young people through 4-H.  He enjoyed working with people, especially teaching young people gun safety.  He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.  Richard was also a winemaker.   

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet Hiles Little from New Kensington PA.  They were married October 8, 1955.  He is also survived by three sons; Thomas Little and his wife Barbara of Walnut Creek, CA; Jeffrey Little and his wife Lisa of Newnan GA and Douglas Little and his wife Debbie of State College PA and one daughter Laura Melvin and her husband Durwood of Aiken SC.  Also surviving are his grandchildren who were the light of his life; Gwen and Wesley Little; Brandi Little Mantel and her husband Jason; Megan Little Fayling and her husband Jason; Ryan and Carrie Little and Moriah and Bryan Melvin.  Also surviving are three great-grandchildren; Seth and Thatcher Fayling and Nicholas Mantel.   

He is also survived by three brothers; William Little of Williamsport PA; David Little and his wife Lorraine of Millville PA and Lewis Little and his wife Judy of Pittsburgh PA and two sisters; Judy Swinehart and her husband John of Jersey Shore PA and Sally Knipe and her husband Sharry of Liberty PA.  He is also survived by one sister-in-law Dr. Linda Hiles of New Kensington PA.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Cherry Grove Cemetery Nordmont PA with the Reverend Robert Brown of Laporte Methodist Church officiating.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Camp Victory PO Box 810 Millville PA 17846 or American Diabetes Association Somerset Office 19 School House Road Somerset NJ  08873 or The Smile Train PO Box 96231 Washington DC 20090-6231.
