Nancy P. Vella, 75, of 12
Center Street Danville PA went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday,
April 19, 2010 at her residence. She was born March 26, 1935 in Lewistown,
PA the daughter of the late Thomas and Faye Heeter Garrett.
She graduated from Menno
Union High School in Belleville PA in 1953 and graduated from Geisinger
School of Nursing in Danville PA in 1956.
Nancy was a member of
First Baptist Church in Danville PA. Nancy’s greatest devotion was to her
family and was well known for her untiring devotion to children. Her first
foster parenting began with the Lutheran Intermission. She fostered
children from 1961 through 2005, taking care in excess of 50 foster children
throughout that time period. She believed in mixing medically dependent
children with healthy children so that they would not see any differences.
She loved to shop, garden and cook.
She served as President
of Northumberland Foster Care and served on the Danville Board of Advisory
for Children. She served on the Board of the Northumberland County Children
and Youth. Her honors included Soroptomist’s Woman of the Year for the
care of special children. She received the Visionary Award from the
Danville Child Development Center. She was a foster parent for Children’s
Choice and was recognized by them for her activities involving children.
She founded the Danville
Child Development Center which began in Shiloh Church of Christ on Bloom
Road in Danville PA and later moved to the current location on the State
She is survived by her
husband of 53 years, Raymond Vella whom she married March 2, 1957. Also
surviving are three sons; Michael Vella and his wife Joan of Mifflinburg PA;
Matthew Vella and his wife Carolyn of Middleburg VA and Jonathan Vella and
his wife Carolyn of Catawissa PA and two daughters; Catherine Hunt and her
husband Patrick of Rhode Island and Radeena Pennell of Catawissa PA. She is
also survived by 11 grandchildren; Megan, Leighrae, Rejane, Nathan, Tyler,
Emily, Devon, Justin, Rachel, Paige and Natasha. Also surviving is one
sister, Sally Kalbach of Reisterstown, Maryland and one brother Thomas
Garrett of Griffin, Georgia.
A Celebration of Nancy’s
life will be held Friday, April 23, 2010 at First Baptist Church 20
Brookside Drive Danville PA at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Dr. Harry H.
Wonderland assisted by the Reverend Dawes Dunham and the Reverend Steven W.
Fauser St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be private. Friends will be
received from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM at the church. Memorial contributions
may be made to either First Baptist Church 20 Brookside Drive Danville PA or
Geisinger Hospice 109 Woodbine Lane Danville PA 17821. Arrangements are
under the direction of the Visneski Funeral Home 10 W Mahoning Street
