Mary McDermott

March 16, 2009

At age 79, on Monday, March 16, 2009, Mary’s journey in this life ended at Grandview Health Homes of Danville, PA and now goes with her Lord and Savior in Heaven.  Mary was born June 11, 1929 in Springfield Township, PA., and was the daughter of Rush and Marion (Wright) Gates.

She graduated from Troy High School in 1947.

Horseheads, NY held many fond memories for Mary and her family. Her managerial job at the Dollar Guide was one of those memories. She and husband, George lived in Zephyrhills, FL for nearly three decades. After many years, Mary retired from Lawyers Title Services in Lakeland, FL.  Her final years of retirement were spent in Danville, PA at the Heritage Heights Apartments so she could be near her son and daughter-in-law.

Mary won recognition in high school for her poetry talent. Making cards for friends and family on her computer was something she thoroughly enjoyed. Faith in God and being active in church were always very important to her and she was very grateful for the many friends she made there.

She was predeceased by her loving husband; George E. McDermott, son; Stanley E. McDermott, brothers; Donald Gates, Leslie Gates and sister; Irene (Gates) Durfey.

Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law; Brian and Elizabeth McDermott of Riverside, PA., grandson; Keith A. McDermott and fiancé Jessica Dreger, Atlanta, GA., sisters; Justine Phinney of Zephyrhills, FL., Barbara (Leslie) Phenes of Elmira Heights, NY., and Ruthann (Henry) Howe of Tioga, PA., brother; Wayne (Juanita) Gates of Springfield, PA., several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend A Celebration of Mary’s Life Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1:00 PM  at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 West Mahoning Street Danville PA with the Reverend David R. Schnaars officiating.  Friends will be received from 11:30 AM until the time of service.  Burial will be private at a later date in the Harkness Cemetery in Springfield PA.  The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh United Church of Christ 500 Bloom Street Danville PA.
