JRussell T. "Russ" Sweely

April 13, 2009

Russell T. “Russ” Sweely, 72, of 700 Horizon Avenue Northumberland PA went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday morning, April 13, 2009 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA.  He was born January 21, 1937 in Williamsport PA the son of the late Russell and Margaret Tate Sweely. 

He graduated from Bradford High School in Bradford PA and from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Pharmacy.  He was employed as a Registered Pharmacist at the Selinsgrove State School in Selinsgrove PA, from where he retired.  After his retirement, he was employed part time as a Registered Pharmacist in various pharmacies in North and South Carolina.   

Russ enjoyed fishing and hunting.  A lover of dogs, he was especially fond of his golden retriever, Mindy and his black labrador, Spooker.  He founded the Carolina Canine Healers, a group of registered therapy dogs, which he and his wife used to minister to patients in nursing homes in both North and South Carolina.  He also enjoyed traveling to the South during the winter months and having fellowship with his friends at Sunset Beach Community Church in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. 

He was a member of the Sunbury Bible Church.

 He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth M. “Betz” Geiger Sweely.  Also surviving is one son Robert B. Geiger of Catawissa PA and one daughter Sue Ann Stauffer and her husband Steven of Catawissa PA.  He is also survived by several grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  Also surviving is one sister, Sally Smith and her husband Roger of Furlong PA.   

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Russ’s life to be held Wednesday, April 15 2009 at 1:30 PM at Sunbury Bible Church Route 11 Northumberland PA with the Reverend James B. Gross officiating.  Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington, PA.  Friends will be received from 12:00 Noon until the time of service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sunbury Bible Church 135 Spruce Hollow Road Northumberland PA  17857.  Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA. www.visneski.com
