Gerald S. Coates

Gerald S. Coates, 77, of 507 Church Street Danville PA died Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2009 at his residence.  He was born April 4, 1932 in Danville PA the son of the late Gerald L. and Ruth N. Showers Coates. 

He graduated from Danville High School.  He attended Bloomsburg College and Wilkes University.  He served with the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War.   Mr. Coates retired as an assistant director of the Vocational Adjustment Department of Danville State Hospital Danville PA.  He was a member of Christ Memorial Episcopal Church Danville PA.  He was active with the Danville Area Emergency Management Association.  Mr. Coates enjoyed reading, classical music and especially helping others.  He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Danville-Mahoning Lodge #224 F & AM Danville PA.   

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley L. Stewart Coates whom he married July 13, 1957.  Also surviving are two sons; David Coates of Bloomsburg PA and Eric Coates of Danville PA and two daughters; Melinda Coates of Columbus OH and Barbara Coates, at home.  He is also survived by one sister Jane Pierce and her husband Robert of Williamsport PA.  Several nieces and nephews also survive him.  He was preceded in death by one sister Shirley K. Turnmyre on September 18, 2009.   

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 11:30 AM at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church East Market and Pine Streets Danville PA with the Reverend Nancy Shank officiating.  Burial will be private in Elan Memorial Park Bloomsburg PA.  The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to either The American Heart Association 417 A Phoenix Drive Chambersburg PA  17201 or The Tourette Syndrome Association 42-40 Bell Boulevard Suite 205 Bayside NY  11361.  www.tsa.usa.org.   Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA.  www.visneski.com
