Oscar F. Gassert, 87

Oscar F. Gassert, 87, of Snydertown Road Danville PA passed away Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA where he had been a patient.  He was born March 21 1921 in Huntingdon County Pennsylvania the son of the late Norma Burdge and the late Frederick Gassert.

He grew up in Columbia County PA with his late father Frederick and late stepmother Pearl Gassert.  He was a staff sergeant with the Army Air Corps during World War II.  For many years, Mr. Gassert owned and operated a farm in Columbia County.  He was also an independent owner and operator in the trucking industry which included contracting for Hanover Foods.  Mr. Gassert was also employed by AC&F Industries in Berwick PA and was a mechanic.  He was head of the motorcade of the CC Camp.

He was a life member of the Elks, Moose and American Legion; all of Bloomsburg PA  and the Catawissa VFW.  He was a 50 year member of the Washington Lodge #265 F & AM Bloomsburg PA and a member of the Caldwell Consistory Bloomsburg PA.  Mr. Gassert had served on the board of the Mifflin Township Supervisors and was a former member of the Mifflinville and Riverside Fire Companies.  He was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church Mifflinville PA and was a member of St. John’s “Vought’s” Lutheran Church in Mayberry Township PA. 

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Laura Comstock Gassert whom he married December 6 1986 and two daughters; Jane Halsey and her husband John of Seattle Washington and Kathy Lawton and her husband James of Rochester NY.  Also surviving is one stepson Brian Stout and two stepdaughters; Brenda Lawvere and Melissa Reichenbach and her husband Thomas.  Also surviving are 13 grandchildren Patti and Zachary Lawton; Nina Stout, Rachel Foster; Joshua, Aaron, Rebekah, Mary, James, Elisabeth and Paul Lawvere and Jason and Sabrina Reichenbach.  He is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Anthony, Brennan, Lauren, Gabrielle and Victoria. 

Also surviving is one brother; Elmer Bolinger and three sisters; Elsie Brindle, Eva McCall and Inez Stake and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one brother Hanley Gassert.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services to be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, April 17 2008 at St. John’s “Vought’s” Lutheran Church 29 High Road (Mayberry Township) Danville PA with his pastor the Reverend Christoph Teille officiating.  Burial will be in Creveling Cemetery Almedia PA.  Friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.  Masonic services will be conducted at 9:45 AM.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA.  www.visneski.com
