Nelson D. Young

Nelson D. Young, 87, of 101 N Ardmoor Avenue Danville PA died Wednesday February 6 2008 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA.  He was born February 26 1920 in his parentsí home at 219 Gearhart Street Riverside PA the son of the late Wellington D. and M. Faye Freese Young.   

He graduated from Danville High School in 1938.  In 1940 he was employed as a truck driver for M. Fogle Construction in Riverside PA and in 1941 as a salesperson for R.L. Marks Clothing. 

Mr. Young was inducted into the US Army on February 17 1941 where he served as a Hq Battery in the 107th Field Artillery Battalion, as a Forward Observer where he moved with infantry units to coordinate artillery strikes. His battles and campaigns included in 1944; Normandy (D-Day, Omaha Beach), Northern France, Rhineland, (Hurtgen Forest), Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge).  He was wounded December 18, 1944 at Ardennes for which he received the Purple Heart.  Other military decorations included the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European, African and the Middle Eastern Service Medal with four bronze stars.  He separated from the Army August 10, 1945. 

Mr. Young used the GI bill to study photography.  He worked with Glen Edwards and Dobbins from Bloomsburg PA.  He then operated the Nelson Young Studio in Danville specializing in portrait and commercial photography.  He submitted photographs to several magazines and newspapers resulting in credits that included National Geographic, National Horseman and Sunday Bulletin Magazine. 

He moved his family to the Candle Wood Lake area of Connecticut around 1950 where he worked for Industrial Friction and then Sperry Rand.  He returned to the Danville area in 1955 to work for Kennedy Van Saun of Danville as a machinist and later as a cost and time estimator.   He retired from KVS in 1983.   

Mr. Young was appointed part time as the zoning officer for Mahoning Township in the early 1960ís from which he retired in 2004. 

He was a member of Hendrickson United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 40 of Danville, Danville Elks Lodge #754 and the former Mahoning Township Fire Police.  He enjoyed bowling with the Kennedy Van Saun Bowling League.  He was an airplane pilot and enjoyed riding motorcycles, HAM radio, CB radio, hunting and fishing. 

 Mr. Young was married for 60 years to Ruth L. Cortright Young who preceded him in death June 29 2006.  They were married October 6 1945.  He is survived by one son; Jeffery D. Young of Danville PA and one daughter Leslie F. Sweeney of Danville PA. Also surviving is one grandson Trevor J. Young of Jerseytown PA.  He is also survived by one sister Martha Morrall and her husband Joseph of Lewisburg PA and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two brothers; Ray C. Young in 1985 and Earl W. Young in 1998.   

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services to be held Monday February 11 2008 at 2:00 PM from Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA with the Reverend Rayvon Hilliard officiating.  Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery Danville PA.  Friends will be received from 12:30 PM until the time of service. Military rites will be accorded by the Montour County Veterans Association.  Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donorís choice.  www.visneski.com
