Dorothy Forney Stephens, 97

Dorothy Forney Stephens, 97, died Sunday, February 11, 2007 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA after a short illness.  Born Dorothy Louise Forney on November 24, 1909, Mrs. Stephens lived in Danville PA all her life.  She was born on West Market Street, resided most of her life on West Mahoning Street and was currently living at Mahoning Terrace Apartments in Danville PA.

Mrs. Stephens worked many years at Sherman’s Jewelry Store in Danville and was voted salesman of the year in the early 1960’s.  She was an active member of Mahoning Presbyterian Church and a volunteer at Geisinger Medical Center.  She traveled extensively with her family throughout the United States and Canada and took her first trip to Europe well into her 70’s.  She was an avid walker, enjoyed knitting, oil-painting and candle making.  She adored chocolates and beautiful views and delighted in the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stephens was married to H. Benson Stephens in November 1936 and he preceded her in death on December 24, 1982.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Carlough of Danville, her son Benson Lee Stephens of Carolina Beach, North Carolina and her grandchildren Leslie Carlough of Portland Oregon, Martha Carlough of Durham, North Carolina, Rebecca Robbins Crider of New York, NY, Jessa Stephens of State College, PA and Heath Stephens of Eagle Pass, Texas.  She is also survived by five great-grandchildren – Charlotte, Caroline and Christian Crider of New York, NY and Kestrel and Savannah Carlough of Portland Oregon.  She is also survived by her sister Jean Louise Forney of Danville PA.

Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by her sisters; Mary Pickin, Anna Everett, Bess Johnson, Barbara Conner and Bernice Forney and her brothers Charles “Sam” Forney and Robert Forney. 

The family will have a private burial service with her pastor the Reverend Judson S. Bennett officiating assisted by the Reverend Dr. William L. Carlough, her son-in-law.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Stephen’s memory may be made to Mahoning Presbyterian Church 218 Ferry Street Danville PA 17821. Arrangements are under the direction of the Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA.
