Sonia Lee

Sonia Lee, 88, of Danville, PA and formerly of Maplewood, New Jersey where she had resided for 40 years died Monday evening, March 17, 2003, at Geisinger Medical Center Danville, PA.  She was born November 17, 1914 in Simla, India the daughter of the late Brigadier General James Charles McKenna O.B.E. and Olivia Kemsley McKenna.  

She had an extensive European education in Sorbonne, France; Madrid, Spain and Vienna; all in language studies.  She received her Masters degree at Seton Hall University and her PhD at New York University.  During World War II, she was a member of the British Board of Censorship.  She was self-employed and owned Mrs. Lee’s School of Languages in Maplewood, New Jersey from 1946 – 1996.  She was a member of the Ridgewood Presbyterian Church Ridgewood, New Jersey and the Grove Presbyterian Church Danville, PA.  She was a member of the Alliance Francais of Bergan County, New Jersey and the Modern Languages Association.  She was an avid reader and  historian. She enjoyed planning trips to Europe. 

Mrs. Lee was married March 9, 1943 in Bermuda to the late Thomas F. Lee who preceded her in death May 7, 1994.  She is survived by two sons; T. Christopher Lee and daughter-in-law Elaine B. of Wyckoff, New Jersey; James W. Lee and daughter-in-law Sandra J. of Winter Park, Florida and one daughter; Elaine L. Andrews and son-in-law Reverend Robert J. of Danville, PA and eight grandchildren. 

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 12:30 PM at Grove Presbyterian Church 330 Bloom Road Danville, PA with her son-in-law the Reverend Robert J. Andrews officiating.  Burial will be private.  Friends will be received from 11:30 AM until the time of service in the Great Room of Grove Presbyterian Church.  Memorial contributions may be made to Grove Presbyterian Memorial Garden Fund Church Danville, PA.
