Ruth N. Coates

She was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Danville, a daughter of the late Henry and Carrie (Harpster) Showers. She was married for 49 years to Gerald L. Coates, who died in 1979.  Mrs. Coates was employed as an occupational therapist for 32 years at Danville State Hospital, retiring in 1972.   She was a member of Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild.  She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star 186, Danville, and Rugged Cross White Shrine of Jerusalem 39, Bloomsburg.  Mrs. Coates enjoyed cooking, gardening, bird watching, and traveling.  Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald S. and Shirley Coates of Danville; two daughters, Shirley K. Turnmyre of St. Pete Beach, Fla., and Jane Pierce and son-in-law, Robert Pierce of Williamsport; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth Machusak of Mechanisburg.  She was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.  Visitors may call from noon to 1 Wednesday at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, East Market and Pine streets, Danville, where a Requiem Mass will be conducted at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Frank A. Edmands.  Burial will be in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge.  The family will provide flowers. Contributions may be made to Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Visneski Funeral Home, 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville.
