Jack R. Long

Jack R. Long, 79, of 541 Railroad Street Danville PA passed away Friday, December 3, 2010 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA.  He was born February 8, 1931 in Shamokin PA the son of the late George W. and Bertha B. McClain Long. 

He graduated from Shamokin High School in 1950 and from Bloomsburg University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.  While at Bloomsburg University, he was a member of the 1951 Huskies undefeated football team.  He served in the United States Navy on the USS Currituck during the Korean War. 

Jack was employed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and retired as the manager of the Berwick office.  He was a lifetime member of the Elks, American Legion, VFW and a member of the Washies Fire Company; all of Danville PA.   

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susann Pursel Long whom he married July 14, 1956.  He is also survived by one son, Dr. George R. Long and his wife Julia Roberts-Long of Indiana PA and one granddaughter, Taylor S. Long.  Also surviving is one sister, Joy Clark of Shamokin PA.  He was preceded in death by two brothers; Paul and George Long and three sisters; Alda Hunt, Wilma Collier and Shirley Miller.  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. 10 W Mahoning Street Danville PA with the Reverend Dr. Robert J. Andrews Grove Presbyterian Church Danville PA officiating.  Burial will be private in Riverview Cemetery Northumberland PA with military rites accorded by the Montour County Veterans Association.  The family will provide flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made to Thomas Beaver Free Library 25 East Market Street Danville PA 17821or the charity of the donorís choice.    www.visneski.com.
